Competence Center for Social Innovation (CSI-HSG) The Competence Center for Social Innovation at the University of St.Gallen (CSI-HSG) contributes towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at a higher pace. We help people and organizations to develop a common mindset and work more effectively towards impact, by increasing their know-how and capabilities for collaboration and bridging rationalities. We develop, test, and iterate upon formats that generate public value in new ways. Our approach is open and collaborative, bringing together a range of stakeholders, including public sector entities, the private sector and civil society organizations. To achieve our vision and objectives, we are engaged in the following core activities: Teaching: CSI-HSG prepares, educates and empowers students to be changemakers, who have impact-driven entrepreneurial skills, capabilities to innovate, foster change, work in cross-sector collaborative settings and bridge rationalities. The aim is to reach students from different levels and fields of study at the University of St. Gallen. Research: In-depth knowledge about how to achieve impact forms the basis of all CSI-HSG activities and is therefore key. We will conduct research in relevant fields of social innovation and impact-driven entrepreneurship with the aim of shaping the practice and the international debate on achieving the SDGs. The research activities include the development of conceptual foundation of CSI-HSG as well as basic and field research in key areas. Executive Education: Bridging rationalities between sectors and creating and implementing impact-oriented business models and innovative financing models requires people and organizations that have the proper capabilities to do so. That is why executive education of practitioners is crucial. Based on the fact that each sector has a different primary logic there are different needs when it comes to skills and capability development. As a result, CSI-HSG will provide sector or even organization-specific training offerings. Executive education programs for the private sector, the non-profit sector, the public sector and specifically the donor agencies are planned. Innovation: The development and implementation of impact-oriented solutions requires innovative formats and approaches as well as business and financial models. CSI-HSG will develop, test and apply innovative and collaborative methods to generate solutions for sustainable impact. For this purpose, we pursue an open approach, bringing together public sector entities, the private sector and civil society organizations. CSI-HSG develops tailor-made formats addressing specific needs and challenges of public sector entities, companies or non-profit organizations and provides process support as well as technical expertise. Community & Dissemination: Dissemination and exchange of experiences and knowledge between different sectors is another key factor for bridging rationalities and improve cross-sector partnerships. We promote a community of practice by bringing together people from different sectors. Moreover, CSI-HSG is dedicated to spread the word about social innovation to the broader public. The Competence Center for Social Innovation (CSI-HSG) was launched as Competence Center for Impact-Driven Entrepreneurship and Public Innovation (IDEPI-HSG) in 2018 and renamed to CSI-HSG in early 2020. It is affiliated with the Institute for Systemic Management and Public Governance (IMP-HSG) and the School of Economics and Political Science (SEPS) at the University of St. Gallen. The competence center is also a partner of the Initiative for Blended Finance (IBF) at the University of Zurich.
